THE TASTING ROOM

In 1992, Peirano Estate Vineyards began bottling and selling wine using their estate grown grapes. Until this point, Lance Randolph, fourth generation Peirano, produced wine simply for his enjoyment and that of his close family and friends.  The rest of the grapes were sold to winemakers across the country.  It was well-known amongst Lance's family and friends that he had a knack for making well-balanced, elegant wines but was not interested in selling it to the masses.  At their insistence, Lance began bottling and selling his wine to wine enthusiasts throughout the United States.

Visit2.jpgIn 1997, several city and commission representatives saw the potential for developing tourism for wine in Lodi and approached Lance about opening a tasting room on the vineyard estate.  They felt his rich family history, which dates back to the late 1800's in Lodi, was a very compelling story which visitors would enjoy hearing.  After several months of late night planning sessions and dozens of meetings with city and county planning commissions, Peirano Estate Vineyards revamped the old house the Peirano's had built in the early 1900's and turned it into one of the first tasting rooms in Lodi.

Visit3.jpgThe living room where Lance played with his trucks as a child is now a wine bar with a quaint and charming gift shop which sells a wide assortment of wine accessories and novelties.  What used to be his parent's bedroom is now Lance's office.  The kitchen is still original and used for preparing elaborate winemakers dinners and wine club member socials held at the tasting room.  The hardwood floors are the same ones laid in the 1900's.

DSC_0012_1.JPGOther than regular maintenance and a few new additions, which include about three acres of lawn and huge shade trees with picnic tables enjoyed by hundreds of Peirano loyalists, the house remains as it was when it was built.  The warm, cozy feeling the Peirano's loved for over a century is now shared with anyone interested in tasting quality wine with a great story.  It is one of the only tasting rooms in Lodi that provides panoramic views of the estate vineyards.

Visit4.jpgOne of the first things you will see when approaching the tasting room is what is now one of the single, largest blocks of head trained, naturally rooted Old Vine Zinfandel left in the United States.  These vines, produced from cuttings Lance's great grandfather, Giacomo, brought over from Italy in the late 1800's, are in the true old head pruned style as was true of Italian vines in the 1800's.  Many are three feet tall to accommodate viticulture practices of his great grandfather, who was only five feet tall himself.  The history that resides on the property where generations of Peirano's tirelessly farmed the family grapes is evident by the tremendous condition these vines have remained in for over one hundred years.
